I’m very lucky to be married to Zubair, who has always supported me through my baking journey. ![]() I think it’s very important to have support from your loved ones, especially your spouse. There have been hiccups and glitches but we survived. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?Īs a stay at home mom of two adorable daughters that I’m super proud of, it hasn’t been a walk in the park owning a cottage business while managing my regular chores and all the other aspects of my life. It’s the most excited I’ve been since the birth if my children! We pick a theme and make a bake accordingly for a specific day and post it all together under a unique hashtag. As the business got a little slower, I switched gears to participate in collaborations with other cake and cookie artists. I was much busier with orders before the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is on Instagram that I generally get my orders for my cottage business. I then had family and friends egging me to showcase my work on social media, so I decided to start a page on Instagram. I remember how excited I was to make my first set of decorated cookies, which took me forever to make. I was absolutely mesmerized by her work and I decided to start decorating cookies as well. My Facebook by now had sensed my inclination towards pretty pastries and I started having videos by Amber from Sweetambs start showing up on my feed. ![]() I finally owned a kitchen aid mixer it was a game changer for me. My husband is a kitchen gadget fanatic and had a gadget for even slicing boiled eggs. I made a few more cakes, but that sort of fizzled as college ended and real life began. I absolutely hated how marzipan tasted, but I loved how well I could mold it to make anything. It was a two tier cake with a model of him on top of the cake made of marzipan. I was in Pullman, WA at the time and had no access to pre-made fondant, so I found a recipe online and made my own with marshmallows. I remember making my first boxed cake as a junior in college. I stumbled upon the show ‘Cake Boss’ and my fascination with baking was renewed. Years passed and I had moved to the US for college. It was like magic watching cake batter go into an oven and come out as sponge on TV. Maybe because when I was growing up nobody around me baked, not even my mom.
